Woofing / volunteering in return for board and lodging is a great low budget way to see the world and help people. Useful websites are workaway.info and helpx but if you apply to a host, try and be prompt when they respond and flexible with dates as they are dealing with many volunteers and those that respond will get in first.

This is a fantastic opportunity to see the world and also help people out and learn new skills. Most “work awayers” are outgoing friendly types who just want to experience other ways of life and meet people and have fun.  Do it, you wont regret it and will make a difference to other peoples lives in the process.

What Are The ‘tools of the trade’ Used Daily:

Depends what the host is looking for but if you are willing to give something a go or learn a new skill it will be appreciated.  Cooking is always a plus as often volunteers run on their stomachs!  Gardening and child care are also often sought after and obviously tradesmen are highly sought.

A Typical Day’s Duties:

Whatever the host requires!  We have done everything from gardening to crazy paving, repairing things, renovating, concreting, fitting staircases, tiling floors and fitting kitchens! Painting decorating and everything in between!

Type Of Hours Arrangement:

Most places ask for a minimum hours for example 4 per day for 6 days in return for 2 meals and a bed.  Some ask for 3 full 8 hour days and 4 days off. Each host will specify.

The Best Thing About The Work You Do:

Volunteering gives an opportunity to meet great people and help hosts with all sorts of things they need done.  Helping families and watching their projects grow is a fantastic way to live.  Seeing the world and different cultures is a great experience.

Your Least Favorite Thing About The Work You Do:

Leaving the good hosts!  Often you book in your work not knowing how it will work out, but it is often sad to leave the hosts and their families!  We have stayed in touch with all of ours.

Any Duties You Hadn’t Anticipated Prior To Undertaking The Work:

Lots of things were new – we had never fitted a staircase or fitted a floating ceiling! You can be asked to do all sorts, so be prepared to learn!

Don’t think just do it!  Volunteering is very rewarding.  Stay in touch with your hosts before you arrive and be a good house guest, clean up after yourself, you are there to make the host life easier not harder!
