Great communication and organisational skills are vital as a Production Manager .  Also knowledge of marketing mediums we offer (do technical skill/understanding), documentation skills (documents, spreadsheets), able to lead a meeting internal/external delegates), able to remove roadblocks from the team so they can do their work (e.g, new software, provide external/internal training) ….. So much more!  You have to be prepared and willing to take on anything that needs doing to keep production going !

Tips For Undertaking This Work:

As a Production Manager, showing leadership and organisational skills are key.  So even organising an event i.e. BBQ or online web meeting with lots of people.  Something where you can highlight where you dealt with logistical challenges, i.e different time zones, choosing platforms to use, travel routes for attendees, venue opening times, etc. and how you navigated through these challenges to run the event.

Future Progression Or Developments:

You can progress in time from any level internally to become Production Manager, but be mindful this can take a very long time.  Alternatively, college and uni courses as well as independent accredited and industry recognised courses, are a way to gain qualification to get a entry level position.  In addition to this, apprenticeships are becoming more and more common.

I would say get external qualifications to progress quicker.

What Are The ‘Tools Of The Trade’ Used Daily:
  • Talking face to face and other methods, email, etc.
  • Word, excel for documentation on project
  • We use agile systems so do a daily stand-up (so leading that everyday)
  • Email and phone to answer staff and client queries. 
  • Meeting room for clients and staff meetings, tech to demo ideas/ options.
  • Project Management tools  (task trackers / invoicing and quotes)
A Typical Day’s Duties:

You can feel your work is never ending because you are dealing with live projects And being heavily involved in getting new business. You have to find a balance or you will always be the first one in (in the day) and the last to leave. So plan your day and stick to it. Should you need to address something, then you need to push back something else, to be addressed the following day.

You are not always recognised for the contribution you make, as a lot of what we do is behind the scenes to other colleagues and bosses.  Spreadsheets, invoicing and quotes, take up a lot of your time and keeping you working alone on the computer for ages.

Staff size on whole about 50. Staff size of team I directly manage 4. The number of projects being managed at one time by me can be from 3-7, but the more the team grows the more I will oversee.
