Entry & Progression

Key Skills For The Job:

I provide a platform by which people all around the world can share experiences of the world of work. It is because of this, I see myself as part of a global team.  Behind the scenes however I am a team of one managing all aspects of Our World Of Work.

My duties span different areas of work altogether including website development, maintaining the website, finance management, marketing, graphic design, other business administration tasks.

The overall key skills needed to bring a charitable project “off the ground” and maintain things on a daily basis include a number of things.

A strong passion for the charitable cause you are working for.

Excellent time management skills to be able to maintain the duties that need to be done (updating the website, processing contributions, responding to readers messages, marketing, paying bills/ re-registering subscriptions on time needed for the website).

Planning skills to be able to work smartly with the limited resources available.

Strategic management skills in terms of being able to understand where you plan to begin your work and how you plan on growing moving forward

Being open to advice, criticism, help or collaboration from anyone who shares a passion for the work you are doing so that you can always work to make the charitable project the best it can be. Also with little or no budget, you need to be creative.

be anything you want to be

Vital Key Skill:

Without doubt this would be passion!

I personally manage Our World Of Work around my other daily duties. I am a mum to one and a java programmer by trade.

I built Our World Of Work for reasons close to my heart, that is I was lucky enough to discover an area of work that fulfilled me (programming). I know what the power of doing a job you enjoy is when compared to doing a job as a means only to pay your bills.

I also felt that although the current career advice out there is awesome (…it really is go check it out!) but I felt that there needed to be a more dynamic solution to giving career advice. Also advice with a personal touch by people doing the work and providing differing accounts at the many routes of entry or skills set to undertake a given area of work.

The speed at which the job market changes is ever increasing and what job you pick shouldn’t come down to how the job title sounds or be limited to the advice you get from the people you know.

I know life does not bless all people on this earth equally, therefore what work someone chooses is not always a choice but I hope that in my small way, I can help inspire those who can make a choice.

To live a life of contentment and value in one’s own work has the potential to radiate out to all around us.  Creating happiness not just for ourselves but providing a communal view in helping others which can really change lives throughout generations.  Everything I do is because of this belief, my passion.

Your Personal Experience Of Entering This Role:

I have a BSc (Hons) Business Management degree and I am a self taught java programmer.  My personal experience in changing career aged 30, discovering a field of work I was passionate about was the driving factor of entering this role.

growth
and counting…..!
Tips For Undertaking This Work:

With a strong passion for any charitable cause, it may be easy to get carried away with a bigger picture of all the things you want to do, but you need to start off small and then build on top of what you have.

Do not be afraid to ask anybody for help!  This is particularly key for a charitable cause like Our World Of Work, whereby the ability by which we can help others is only possible by other people. Granted I do the work to provide the platform, but Our World Of Work can only be successful if people around the world help.

Future Progression Or Developments:

Charitable projects are free to develop and grow.  The growth and direction is only limited by the resources available and the direction towards the causes key objective.

I am currently working on a book that I hope will inspire people looking to change career.

In the future I hope to be able to collaborate with other charities and with career advice professionals including schools and higher education institutions. To help inspire more people globally, to select an area of work that fits them the best.
Advice and Thoughts

I don’t think there is any advice I could give to a younger me undertaking this work.  The timing of launching Our World Of Work came about at a time in my life where I was able to draw upon my experiences, experiences which created a passion to want to help others based on my journey.

The only area of my work that I am still adjusting to is asking people for their time, to contribute to Our World Of Work’s Knowledge Base.  I do not like to ask people for their time because I know how precious time is.  Despite this, I must ask….. it is the only way I can enable Our World Of Work to be the best it can be.  So despite being uncomfortable I keep asking.

Day 2 Day

What Are The ‘tools of the trade’ Used Daily:

Everything that goes into building and maintaining a website.  Needing a computer, website content management software.

For content and marketing I use a text editor and image manipulation program for creating graphics.

Social media is used for marketing and to reach out to others, asking them to become contributors in the Knowledge Base.

sharing experience

A Typical Day’s Duties:

Process contributions made into the Knowledge Base.  This includes checking content, verifying the author and the work undertaken.  Proofreading content, producing the entry to be published into the Knowledge Base. Making the entry live, promoting the latest entries online.

Ensure the website is running fine, check for any updates needed and work on any changed required. Deal with any problems that arise, with the site being down or any problems logged.

Promote, promote, promote!

Is Travelling A Regularly Part Of This Work:

No

Weekly Working Hours / Type Of Hours Arrangement:

With such a passion for making the biggest impact possible I work as smartly and resourcefully as I can.

The biggest factor impacting on the number of hours I work is the number of contributions made in a given time. The more contributions I have (the happier I am ? ) the busier I am to ensure all entries are vetted, produced and made live, ready to inspire our readers.

Good Bad Unknown

The Best Thing About The Work You Do:

Being able to inspire someone else to discover a job that makes them the happiest they can be while working.

Your Least Favorite Thing About The Work You Do:

The least favorite thing I would say is discovering just how many social media accounts do not seem to have any real people behind them.

Maybe I am old fashioned but I am surprised at how little reply I receive when approaching people or organisations via social media.  When asking for people to contributions to the Knowledge Base I keep things short and to the point.  I know time is valuable and you need to be clear about what you are asking of someone.  I am just very surprised at how few replies I receive.

If anyone would have asked me a year ago what the rate of response would be I would have guessed 60%.  This 60% includes replies along the lines of “thanks for contacting us, we wish you all the best but we are unable to contribute at the present time” .

Speaking of being old fashioned, I also sent out postal mail to introduce Our World Of Work and ask for contributions into the Knowledge Base but from this campaign I didn’t receive any replies. It will not deter me, I am just a little shocked at the response rate, this is my least favorite part of the work I do.

Any Duties You Hadn’t Anticipated Prior To Undertaking The Work:

I have a broad range of skills when it comes to all things business .  With my experience through my working life, in my education and from my passion for business this meant there were no duties I had not anticipated prior to undertaking this work.

Extra

The Top Perks Of The Work:
