Tips For Undertaking This Work:

An internship with a popular website can get your foot in the door. Make sure the terms of any internship are properly outlined – as some websites and blogs tend to use internships for free content and then do not offer permanent positions. Check the website ranking and make sure you will be properly credited before undertaking any free work. Ensure that you will be provided with a reference to add to your CV/Portfolio.

Future Progression Or Developments:

After interning or working for low rates, it’s possible to simply progress to work for more professional websites with a larger audience. This can also expand to include print work or other mediums. Building strong writing samples is key. You need to display your ability to potential employers, so it’s important that you create diverse pieces that are also relevant to the topics they specialize in.
Advice and Thoughts

Be careful when undertaking any work that is freelance and without a contract. Be aware that no matter how stable the job becomes, it is possible for the client to terminate at any time if you have not signed an agreement. There are many websites that do take content for free from writers and abuse the system. Make sure you engage with any client or employer to make sure there are some rules established and a healthy relationship – which means meeting deadlines on time, and in return, being paid in a timely fashion.

The Best Thing About The Work You Do:

The freedom to do what I love and the flexible hours. I have taken my job on the road for several years, and can comfortably work anywhere with WIFI. My work all began from a personal passion that I did for fun by creating my own fashion blog as a teenager. It has evolved to become an immersive learning experience that has opened up in many other directions.

Your Least Favorite Thing About The Work You Do:

Dealing with unpredictable clients. There have been times that I have been left unpaid or my work has been stolen. There are almost no rights for those who freelance, and often there is little you can do. It’s a learning curve and you get a sixth sense for clients who are trustworthy after some experience.

Any Duties You Hadn’t Anticipated Prior To Undertaking The Work:

Learning the more technical side – HTML, SEO, writing for computer/google readability.

The Top Perks Of The Work:

I have had some amazing opportunities offered to me since beginning this line of work. As a twenty-something, I received invitations to parties held by Vogue and Karl Lagerfeld. I was offered to attend London Fashion Week shows, magazine launches, etc. Seeing my work featured on Vogue and Fashionista.com, and being used as a source by huge websites. This is a perk for me – because it has given me a sense of personal accomplishment just to be recognized. Being free to travel, I also spent the majority of my twenties travelling around Europe, which enabled me to see incredible things and also work part-time as a fashion stylist.

Other Work In The Same Sector:

Fashion marketing, fashion styling, graphic design for fashion products/websites, social media management for brands, fashion photography.
